Hey, y'all, it's Kim from Kudzu Killers and I'm back with an all new season. Finally. Sorry, I've been gone for a while. It seems like forever that I've been gone.
I've really missed you, guys, but I had to get some things together in my life, mainly myself. I've had some health issues, and Lark, as you know, has gone on to do bigger and better things like get married to her rocker boyfriend and other fun projects. So it's just me and maybe an occasional guest here and there who will talk about all things true crime. For those of you used to my editing things to death in this past, this episode is pretty much unedited except for adding intros and outros.
My editing website that I used to use all the time now charges of Fortune. So I'm in search of a cheaper option right now, So bear with me while I get this thing going again. Before I get down to business today, I just want to bring up a couple of future episodes that we'll have on here, crimes that have happened within just the last week or so. I'm not sure if all of you have heard about them, but the first one involves a family near Springdale, Arkansas.
That's up in the northwest corner for those of you not familiar up in the Ozarks. Clinton and Kristen Brink and their two young daughters went for a hike one day in Devil's Den State Park near Springdale, when from out of nowhere, a man stabbed the parents to death. The two young girls were taken to a safe hiding place by their mom, and then she went back to help the dad when she lost her life as well. A man named Andrew McGann, twenty eight years old has been arrested.
He was set to be a teacher this fall in Springdale, which to me is frightening. The second is an active case about a baby left in someone's front yard in a car seat in Dyer County, Tennessee. That's about sixty or seventy miles north of Memphis. Someone who knew who the child was evidently and the police began to look for the parents.
They were found about forty miles away, dead, gunshot wound in a wooded area, not only the parents of the baby, but two other family members as well. At this time, Austin Drummond has been identified as the main suspect. But he's still at large as of yesterday and is considered our and dangerous. So if you happen to know who this guy is or run across him, don't try to do anything.
Don't be a hero. Called the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation at seven three one four one five, seven nine six y two or seven three one three three three zero eight one one. That's one eight hundred TB. I find this info will be in the transcript of the episode that I will probably have on later today or tomorrow on our blog, which is Kudzu Killerspod dot blogspot dot com, and I'll have that written out for you on the transcript. Kudzukillerspod.blogspot.com
So those are future episodes that I have coming up as more information comes in and I'm able to put piece together a decent episode about it. But today I'm gonna talk about a case I'm sure you all have heard of. I just wanted to put in my two cents about and move on, And I'm talking about the murders of four young college kids all around twenty at the University of Idaho and Moscow, Idaho, by an intruder who broke into their home. This one is scary for anyone out there who has college kids.
I know it is for me. Mine's not in college, but she just moved out on her own, and that's kind of scary to me. It made me think how dangerous it is for our kids on college campuses and apartments, not only girls, because one of these victims was the boyfriend of one of the girls who just happened to be staying over. So looking back over the last few decades, colleges it seems have become co ed hunting grounds.
I mean, we know they were for Ted Bundy and Danny Rawling, but they were serial killers who prayed on the vulnerable and naive During a time when we didn't really see this kind of thing on the news all the time like we do now. Mass shootings and murders and all these things happened on our college campuses, and they have happened in the past in dorms and frat houses or sorority houses or off campus houses like this one today. Remember the University of Texas shooter back in the day in nineteen sixty six, I think his name was Charles Whitman, and he killed seventeen people from the clock tower, including his wife and mother who he'd murdered at home before he left, and he wounded thirty one more before he was taken out by the police. Now, these kids, though, were in their off campus home.
It was the middle of the night, and they thought they were safe after a night of being out and kind of partying with friends. They thought they were protected until a lunatic broke into their home and killed them for no good reason other than he wanted to. That's the only thing that can be figured out because he's not talking. Maybe it was revenge for being rejected by one of the girls.
He did not take rejection very well, according to witnesses who had contact with him before. Or maybe it was just to see how it felt to murder somebody. He was a criminology grad with an interest in serial killers from what I've read, and a
, and a criminology grad student who's a little strange already. It kind of makes sense.
I guess. He left two surviving roommates, and no one knows why, especially Dylan Mortensen, who lived on the same floor as Xana Kernodle according to one report that I read, and she actually saw him in the house while he was still there. Investigators are pretty sure he saw her as well, but he didn't do anything. The general feeling is that he had already taken longer than he had planned to kill the other four.
He only planned to kill two. From what they can figure out. Like I said, he's not talking, but evidently he only planned on killing two girls, and he just happened to run across a third girl and killed her and her boyfriend as well. And she fought like crazy, and it took him much longer than he had planned to be there.
I guess he was afraid someone had called nine one one already or something like that, so he took off, and he left two girls alive. Evidently, like I said, Xana Kernodle and Kaylee Goncalves both put up a struggle, pretty big struggle, and it cost him more time than he thought it would. He was afraid of being caught by police, so it didn't work out for him. But anyway, he realized he needed to get out and get going, and he didn't understand or didn't know at the time that nine to one wood And wouldn't be called until nearly eleven o'clock the next day.
I'm guessing probably out of fear and out of you know, being afraid to come out of the rooms to do much of anything. And I hear a lot of people are blaming them and saying that that was awful, that they should have called much earlier. And you know, hindsight, they were scared, they were shocked, and they have enough survivor's guilt already, I'm sure. So people need to stop that, you know, people need to stop it.
They lost friends that day and they were almost victims themselves, So just leave them alone. At any rate, the trial is already over. He didn't really have a trial it started, but he confessed because he wanted to avoid the death penalty because he didn't want to die. He's okay with killing four people, but he didn't want to die himself, and so he agreed to a plea deal of life in prison without parole.
So, in light of the Kohberger plea deal, I'd like to talk about the lives of the victims rather than rehash the crime, which, like I said earlier, you've probably already heard about. Anyway. We've heard multiple podcasts and news stories about the crime already. If you don't know the details, drop me a comment on the blog and I'll do a future episode about the case.
But That's not why I wanted to be here and focus on today. Instead of using my time to talk about the murderer, I wanted to talk about the victims and their hopes for the future, and their plans that because of this one idiot and insane person with a knife won't ever be realized. Kaylee Goncalves was known for her vibrant personality, contagious smile, and deep friendship with Madison Mogen that dated back to the sixth grade. Kaylee was set to graduate early in December of twenty twenty two and had already gotten a job lined up with an IT firm in Austin, Texas, to begin after graduation.
Her parents described Kaylee as a go-getter who did everything she set her mind to. She was a fierce protector of family and friends and you know, which probably explains why she was in the shape she was when they found her. She'd recently bought a twenty sixteen Range Rover and planned a trip to Europe next year, and expected to move to Texas after graduation. Like I said, and that was from her sister, Olivia Goncalves on The Today Show.
Kaylee loved country music and concerts and her mini labradoodle. Kaylee no longer lived at the house, but she had taken her range over there to show Maddie and hang out for the weekend. Madison Mogan or Mattie, was a marketing major and was known for her caring and compassionate personality. She had just started a new job at a local restaurant and was in a committed relationship.
Born on May twenty fifth, two thousand and one, in Eugene, Oregon, Maddie spent her early years in Oregon before moving with her family to North Idaho, where she grew up in Coeur d’Alene. She was known affectionately affectionately as Maddie. She was described by her father, Ben Mogan as a bright, bubbly young woman who wanted to watch live music and brought joy to everyone around her. At the University of Idaho, Maddy was a senior major in marketing like I said, and she served as a public relations director for her sorority.
She shared a close bond with her best friend and fellow victim, Kaylee Goncalves, as I said, and the two were found together that night having a sleepover. They were in the same bed next is Xana Kernodle, who was twenty in studying marketing as well. Xana was, by all accounts, a bubbly, hard working student who worked multiple jobs while pursuing her degree. She was known for her close relationship with her family and her boyfriend, the fourth Victim Ethan Chapin.
Born on July fifth, two thousand and two in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Xana grew up in Post Falls, where she excelled in gymnastics and played volleyball, track and soccer throughout her school years. She graduated from Post Falls High School in twenty twenty and went on to study marketing at the University of Idaho, which I think I've said about three times now. I needed to edit this a little more, I suppose. When there, she was active member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority and the Vandal Solutions sales team.
She also worked part time at the Mad Greek Restaurant in Moscow. Xana was known for her vibrant personality, infectious humor, and the warmth she brought to those around her. Her sister Jazzmin described her as someone who always lifted up a room and was so positive and funny that she was loved by everyone. Who met her.
She loved EDM music (that's electronic dance music, for us old people), attending concerts, and spending time with her dog, Shoeshine. Xana and Ethan were often seen together at campus events with friends.
Finally, Ethan Chapin was twenty years old and
studying Recreation, Sport and Tourism management. He was an athlete and
loved the outdoors.Ethan and Xana had been dating for a while and the relationship
seemed a perfect fit. Ethan was a twenty-year-old freshman at the
University of Idaho. He was born in Conway, Washington, one of a set of
triplets. He his sister Maizie, and brother Hunter all attended the
University of Idaho, and Ethan was known for his vibrant personality and
his ability to bring joy to those around him.
His family described him as someone who laughed continuously and was kind to all and a friend to all. Ethan worked at a tulip farm during the twenty twenty one growing season, and the owner said he was a hard worker and role model to the others working there. That could put him with the grumpiest person there, and the person just couldn't be grumpy anymore. He sort of had that kind of a way with people, and the farm has since named yellow and white combination tulips Ethan's Smile after the young man who died in his sleep, fatally stabbed in the chest.
All of the families have set up various charitable foundations for their children, and a quick Google search will find those for you if you'd like to donate to them.
Prosecutors, like I said, made a plea deal with Kohberger for life in prison without the possibility of parole. He took it to avoid the death penalty. The only family attending the sentences were the gun Goncalveses, and they were upset about the plea deal. They wanted the death sentence, and who can blame them, really, I would feel the same way, even though I'm against the death penalty.
I'd feel the same way if it were my daughter, I'd want his, you know, an eye for an eye. They were upset about it. They wanted the death sentence, but the other families were okay with the plea deal. It saved them from having to rehash the murders at every appeal.
Kohberger's lawyers would force and this way they could move on and try to make peace with the loss. But in this case, I have a daughter about the same age. Like I said, I'm torn. Well, I don't believe in the death penalty, as you know, from a money standpoint, because it costs more to go through all of the appeals than it does to keep somebody incarcerated for their whole life.
In this case, I have a daughter about the same age, and I can't say I wouldn't want the death penalty if she were killed in this way. If my child was unrecognizable because of what this evil person did to her, if her roommate couldn't identify her because her face was so badly mangled, I'd want my revenge. I know I would, so I completely understand their desire for the piece of scum who killed her to be put to death. How do you feel would you want the death penalty or for the killer to suffer for the rest of their lives? Maybe is Bubba's girlfriend? Let me know on the blog, which will be, as I said, up and running today.
There you'll find the transcript of this episode, along with a comments section. Would you like to hear more about this case? Is there another case you'd like me to cover? Drop me a comment at Kudzukillerspod.blogspot.com
That's it. I hope you learned a little bit about the lives that were lost and taken far too early from us. Next up, back to the old school serial killer subject William Bonin, otherwise known as the Freeway Killer. He was responsible for the deaths of at least sixteen young men in Los Angeles.
Until next time, stay safe, be alert, and love on your family, and if you have chance, get your concealed carry license because I think we need it these days. Take care.
